William De Morgan was the leading tile designer of the Arts and Crafts movement and famed for his use of rich, vivid colours and orientalist patterns. His eye-catching designs have inspired this new collection, with blue and white tiles hand-painted with dodos, fishing otters, herons looming ominously over frogs, and dragons appearing on coats, sweaters, shirts, trousers, scarves, hats, bags and wallets. Twirling floral arabesques under luminous glazes are printed on soft natural fabrics and calfskin, or handstitched in wool.
Some garments are adorned with whole sequences of tiles. Others with just one detail blown up larger than life. Some pieces glow with all-over pattern. Others feature only a subtle graphic detail. But everywhere you turn, De Morgan’s fantastic creatures, which look as though they’ve just hopped down from the walls of a 19th-century mansion, are hiding among the flowers and leaves.
